Dear Friends,

Thanks to each of you for your interest in and generosity towards the Beatrice family since the death of Jeff. As you know, the situation on October 23rd was pretty dire. Jeff was the sole breadwinner. He had no life insurance and the home faced foreclosure. The mortgage situation seemed an impossible target.

Since then the community of Newton and beyond, including many of you, has responded in an incredible show of generosity. Dozens of people have donated hundreds of hours and raised thousands of dollars. Meals and other support have been and are still being provided to Elinor and her 7 children. We have received money from Bar and Bat Mitzvah’s, from First Communion classes, from strangers and friends. The Jeff Beatrice Sports-a-Thon at Albemarle and The Dinner Dance/Raffle held at the Elks were great successes. The outpouring has been amazing. We have ongoing efforts underway and a larger scale fundraiser scheduled for February 6th (see below).

We are close to a successful outcome on securing the home and need help to bridge the last gap.

We are now in the near final stages of serious negotiations with Ocwen, the mortgage company that is servicing the note on behalf of Deutsche Bank. We have, through an ambitious series of negotiations arrived at a point where The Beatrice Family Trust is close to securing the home for the family ahead of the scheduled foreclosure auction on January 5th.

Can you help us raise the final amount in the next few days? Can you contribute and ask friends, family and colleagues who may be able to help us close this gap?

Dear Friends,

It’s almost Thanksgiving and we have so much to be thankful for at this time of year. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the Beatrice Family, who lives here in Newton, and I wondered how can I help them most effectively; bake a casserole, send a check, donate items of need, etc? Around the city people like myself are trying to come up with creative ways to raise money for Mrs. Beatrice and her 11 children (seven whom are at home). The most pressing issue is how can we help them keep their home? How can we honor Mr. Beatrice, a man who was a dedicated coach to so many youth in Newton.

So my plans to help The Beatrice family stay warm and cozy in their Newton home is to ask my circle of friends to join me Thanksgiving morning for a Burn and Earn Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K/3.1 miles. Arrive at 8:00AM Thursday morning, at my home – 34 Laudholm Road, Newton, for a great cause! You get to feel great enjoying a fabulous walk, jog or run individually or with your family on a crisp Thanksgiving morning and share this incredible time with your neighbors; all while knowing you helped the Beatrice’s come a little closer to keeping their home that they love, a home that these 11 children have grown up in.

Take time this Thanksgiving to give back to a family who have shared their father with Newton’s sports community for all their lives as he coached various Newton teams. Dear coaches, players, and volunteers,

I cannot convey how deeply grateful I am to all of you for the tremendous effort you put into making the November 11th Sport-a-thon such a huge success. The day was so inspiring to me and I hope to all of you. Seeing the community pull together for such a worthy cause just reaffirms my belief that Newton is a very special place.

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the Newton community and everyone who participated in the Sports-a-thon. Over 400 people actively participated and hundreds more turned out to volunteer and support the athletes. From kindergarteners to adults, watching all of the good-natured competitors made for a special day.

We exceeded our fundraising goal and are excited to turn it all over to the Jeffrey Beatrice Family Fund at the Village Bank. What amazed us was the range of donations, from piggy bank raids to large, anonymous contributions. The day itself was everything Jeff loved about youth sports in this city, and there is talk of making some version of this an annual event.

I would like to say some special thank you’s to MaryBath DeNucci and the folks at Pop Warner football, Gina Mulvaney and Chris Banks and the rest of the NNLL Board, Nina Levin who ran the concession stand and coordinated its volunteers, and Kathie Lyons and the folks at Newton Girls Softball. Without any one of these people and organizations the event could not have happened.

Lastly I want to thank every single person who was touched enough by the Beatrices to make the effort to reach out and help. I feel very blessed to have been a part of this day.

If my dad had been there to see all the kids playing, running around, yelling, and simply having a good time, I know he would not have been able to hold back tears. I know he'd be smiling and crying and saying how much he loved what you guys were doing. It is very much appreciated and I had a great time on Wednesday. I watched my little brother, Nathaniel make some good plays at his baseball game. I watched as his team presented him with a captain's medal and named him captain for the day. It felt good to yell for my brothers and sisters, just as my dad would.

“Truly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest” (John 12:24).

With these words, I greet family and friends of Jeff. I also greet the Pastor, Father John Sasani. I thank him for granting me the privilege of sharing these few thoughts with you this morning. We met for the first time just before this Mass began. And when I introduced myself to him as a friend of the Beatrices, he asked if I would give the homily. Thank you, Father, for the confidence you have reposed in me.

Jeff is not supposed to be dead now. Surely, not so soon. He is leaving behind his wife and 11 children. They still need their father around. His death brings so much sadness. But somehow it fits into God’s loving plan for him. For all the days of our lives, all the events in which we are actors, actresses and spectators, all the experiences, pleasant and unpleasant, all the puzzles of life, fit into God’s loving plan for us, in ways that we do not and may never comprehend.

And if I say Jeff is not supposed to be dead now, I realize that I am not supposed to be here. I am not supposed to be in America in October. I usually visit in July or August, and I make sure I leave before it gets cold. But this year, I was held back in Nigeria by meetings and the whole of July, August and September. When I asked the American consulate in Lagos for an interview date so as to renew my visa and I was given a date in September, I began to grumble. I arrived Boston last Thursday evening, and on Saturday evening, I received news of Jeff’s death. I did not understand why I could not come to Boston earlier. I guess I understand now. The Lord wanted me to be at Jeff’s funeral, to be with Elinor, Jeff’s children, his family and friends. The Lord wanted me to be here today to share these few thoughts with you.

I came to the United States in 1991 to study for my doctorate at Boston College. During the years of my studies, 1991-96, I resided at St. Philip Neri Rectory in Waban. There I met the Beatrices. I fondly remember Jeff as a joyful father and a loving husband, and Elinor, a devoted mother of lovely children. And now, Jeff is no more. Now we face the painful reality of death, of Jeff’s death.

Death is the certainty of uncertainty. That we shall die is certain. When, where and how, that is the uncertainty. But our faith in Jesus consoles us in moments like this. Jesus enables us to come to grips with this painful reality by speaking of himself in the words we heard from the Gospel of this Mass. “Truly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest.” Jesus himself is the grain of wheat who falls into the earth. He died and rose for us. And the eternal life he won for us in his death and resurrection is the rich harvest of this grain of wheat that Jesus is.

But in those words, Jesus was not just speaking of himself. He was also speaking of all those who are united with him in faith, hope and love. When Jeff was baptized, he became united to Jesus in his love. As a loving father and husband, he was like Jesus, a grain of wheat that falls into the earth and dies. In his love for his family, he reached out of himself. And in this love with which he reached out, he lost himself so that he can find it in eternal life. By loving so much, he was a grain of wheat that fell into the ground. He touched many lives with his love. The abundant harvest of the grain of wheat that he was is the large number of people he touched by his love. And do we not see a testimony of that abundant harvest here this morning, in the large turnout at this funeral Mass?

The moment of death is a moment of painful separation. But it is also a moment of coming together in love, a time to support one another in love. The moment of separation from a loved one is a moment to come together and stand by each other. And it is love the enables us to do this.

Jeff is gone. But now has he entered into an eternal dialogue with God. And in that dialogue, he can put in a word for his wife and his children, his friends and family. He can tell God to look at us, at each of us, and bless us. Someone who understood this very well was St. Augustine of Hippo who wrote that our loved ones are not dead. They are in God. And God is very near. So we can say that Jeff is not far from us because God is not far from us. That is why we can say that his death fits into God’s loving plan, somehow, in ways that we do not comprehend. Death cannot conquer the love God has for us. The love God has for each of us is stronger than death.

We want to pray in this Eucharist that Jeff may taste the joy of the eternal banquet. And may the love of God, poured forth in this Eucharist, surround and strengthen Elinor and the Beatrices. Beatrice Family Assistance Opportunities

Dear Club Families and Friends,

To help the Beatrice Family, I am passing along to all of you information regarding some of the fundraising and relief efforts scheduled to take place over the next few days.

First of all, I wanted to tell you all that the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club has committed to raising $1,500 in financial support for the Family. As we are aware of the housing difficulties they face, our goal was to provide them with one mortgage payment. I am pleased to report that through the generosity of several members of our board of directors, we are already almost three quarters of the way towards that goal. All of these funds will be donated to the family's relief fund at The Village Bank. If you would like to contribute, please send a check to the Club made payable to the Jeffrey Beatrice Family Fund or make a cash donation in the Club's lobby.

We'd like to deliver these funds by the middle of next week so please hurry. While we want to make this donation on behalf of the Club, we applaud anyone who chooses to give to the fund directly instead. It is important that the family gets help - its not important where the help comes from.

The following additional information is from various groups of people working to help the family:

FIGHT NIGHT
Our good friends at the Nonantum Boxing Club are hosting an action packed Fight Night in honor of their one year anniversary. The event is on Friday October 30th at 75 Adams Street and the fights begin at 7:00 PM. All of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Beatrice Family. Donations to this event should be made payable to the Jeffrey Beatrice Family Fund.

HELPING HANDS:

The NNHS hockey team is holding a yard sale this Saturday 10/31 from 9:00AM - 4:00PM (Rain or Shine). All proceeds to be donated to The Beatrice Family Fund. We are looking for donations of items as well as support from people to come down and purchase items for sale. The sale will be held at 207 Waltham St., West Newton, MA.
Items may be dropped off at my home at 140 Jewett St in Newton Corner (left on 1st. floor rear door porch) or may be dropped off to Tom Ryan, Coach for NNHS team. He can reached by email at (tryan_nnhockey@yahoo.com).

It was pretty obvious from the turn out at the wake and the funeral that Jeff Beatrice touched a lot of hearts during his time with us. His family needs our help. Let's all dig deep and give a little back in their time of need.
